Manifesto

This is us.
This is Brent.
We are English and Irish, Indian and Windrush,
We are Somali, Italian, Romanian, Chinese.
We sing in temples, in pubs and in stadiums.
We speak on the high-roads, in the libraries (shush),
and on the Bakerloo line.
From Stonebridge to Cricklewood
From Queensbury to Queens Park
From Kilburn to Kensal Green,
We are mixing, melding, sharing, cooking,
dancing, praising, raising, playing.
We are unplanned and unfiltered,
We are the first place people come to
and the place people stay.
We are the past, the present and the future.
This is us.
This is Brent.

We are not just a borough of culture,
We are the Borough of Cultures.

About Brent 2020

Brent is The Mayor’s London Borough of Culture for 2020. Our programme will explore the stories, art and emotions that hold life in Brent together, uncovering and celebrating the borough's untold tales and unheard voices.

We are the home of Zadie Smith, reggae, English football and its captains. We have London’s oldest road, the biggest Hindu Temple in Europe, the Kiln Theatre and Mahogany Carnival Design. We are where city becomes Metroland; where roads, waterways and railways cross; where outsiders fight for their place. We are Jayaben Desai, George Michael, Cyrille Regis, Keith Moon, Rachel Yankey, Janet Kay, Twiggy, Bob Marley and Trojan Records. It is from this alchemy that our year of culture comes.

Brent is more than a borough of culture: This is the Borough of Cultures.

Brent's Blueprint Collective, a group of inspirational local young people, are the heart and soul of everything we do: join them here. If you are from the borough you can apply to fund an artistic project here; if you would like to be a part of an existing programme look here; if you’d like to volunteer, put your name down here.

We live in a country that isn’t sure where it’s going. But Brent has never been a place that follows trends: it sets them. As Europe’s eyes turn to Wembley next year for the semi-finals and final of UEFA Euro 2020 we will show them a place that is new, genuine and hopeful.

LONDON BOROUGH OF CULTURE IS A MAYOR OF LONDON INITIATIVE, SUPPORTED BY THE CITY OF LONDON CORPORATION’S CHARITY, CITY BRIDGE TRUST AND AIRBNB.
